One of our very own second-grade teachers, Mrs. Wood, has a baby duck named Lucky—and she definitely lives up to her name! Lucky hatched just before the start of the new school year on August 4th.

Lucky’s story is truly one-of-a-kind. For starters, her parents are two different types of ducks that don’t usually breed together in the wild. Even more unusual, a hen—not a duck—sat on Lucky’s egg!

Chicken and duck eggs have different incubation periods, but the hen didn’t know she was sitting on a duck egg. Her first nest was stolen by a wild animal, so she laid a second. That’s when Lucky’s egg was added. Sadly, the hen’s two chicks from that second nest went missing. On her third nesting attempt, she successfully hatched Lucky’s egg—along with two more chicks.

To keep her safe from wild animals, Lucky was brought inside—and has been thriving ever since.

Lucky has already captured many hearts on campus during her visits. She’s incredibly cute and even more adorable when she playfully tries to nibble on your fingers. Lucky is healthy, happy, and flourishing at the Wood home!
